From Journalist to CEO: Katie Wagner’s Lessons on Profit, Leadership, and Lead Generation
Building a successful business requires more than generating revenue—it requires understanding profit, cash flow, and sustainable growth. In a recent episode of the Pivot to Profit Podcast, Pam Jordan sat down with Katie Wagner, founder and CEO of KWSM: A Digital Marketing Agency, to discuss her journey from television journalist to agency owner and the financial lessons she learned along the way.
Before launching her marketing agency, Wagner spent 15 years as a journalist working with major media outlets including ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox, NPR, and PBS affiliates. Her career shift began when social media transformed how people consumed information. While working in television, she recognized that audiences were moving away from traditional news and toward digital platforms, creating an opportunity for businesses to tell their stories in new ways.
What started as a consulting business quickly became something much larger. Within six weeks of launching her company, Wagner had a full client roster and three employees. Suddenly, she wasn't just providing a service—she was running a business.
One of the most important financial lessons she learned was the difference between top-line revenue and bottom-line profit. Like many entrepreneurs, she initially focused on bringing in clients and generating income. However, she soon realized that revenue alone doesn't guarantee a healthy business. Understanding profit margins, controlling expenses, and ensuring the company remained profitable became critical to long-term success.
Cash flow management was another major lesson. Wagner explained that even when clients promise payment, invoices aren't always paid on time. Meanwhile, payroll and operating expenses continue regardless. Learning to forecast cash flow, maintain operating reserves, and plan ahead helped create financial stability for her growing agency.
Today, KWSM specializes in lead generation marketing, helping businesses create measurable revenue growth through strategic content and brand journalism. Wagner believes that in an era dominated by AI-generated content, authentic storytelling and thought leadership have become more valuable than ever. By focusing on real stories, case studies, and expertise, businesses can build trust and attract qualified leads.
As Pam Jordan often reminds business owners, success isn't determined by what you make—it's determined by what you keep. Wagner's journey serves as a powerful reminder that understanding profit, cash flow, and business fundamentals is essential for every entrepreneur looking to build a lasting company.
